The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist for Mom and Baby

Updated on Feb 21, 2024

Have you entered the 34th week of your pregnancy? You must know that now is the right time to get yourself hospital ready, which is packing your bag to bring your bub home.

What to Pack?

What to pack will depend on the length of your stay in the hospital, and this actually depends on whether you are having a C-section or a vaginal delivery.

Make a Hospital Bag Checklist

Making a checklist will help you ensure that you have packed everything necessary for you and your baby. Before making a checklist, confirm from your hospital what items they already provide. Hospitals generally provide a hospital gown, slippers, pillows, blankets, and even a few essential toiletries.

For Yourself:

#Hospital Gown: It’s a good idea to carry a labor and delivery gowns of your own, one that suits your need, fit, and comfort.

#Clothes/Nightdress: You might want to pack some loose clothes or a maternity nightwear in addition to a hospital gown. Choose front-opening garments that help you breastfeed easily. Also, do not forget to pack a pair of going home clothes.

#Sanitary Napkins: Sanitary napkins, specifically maternity pads, are a necessity after birth for your stay in the hospital.

Nursing Pillow

#Nursing Pillow: Feeding Pillow help in easing contraction pains. They come in use soon after delivery. Using a nursing pillow will make breastfeeding a more comfortable experience for you.

#Nursing Bras: You may probably want to pack a few nursing bras and breast pads if you plan to breastfeed. Nursing bras are comfortable and additionally supportive; they allow you to feed without removing your bra.

#Toiletries: Don’t forget your toothbrush, hand wash, soap, and other toiletries, especially if you are particular about using specific brands.

#Breast Pump and Feeding Bottle: Some women face engorgement issues in the beginning, that is, hardening and swelling of the breasts, which makes it difficult for the baby to feed. Being prepared beforehand will help you avoid any problems in case of an emergency.

For Your Little Bub:

#Baby Clothes: Pack three to four pairs of comfortable and warm clothes for your baby. Little ones dirty themselves quite too much. This should include the baby’s suit, socks, cap, handkerchief, towel, etc.

Baby Blankets

Baby Blanket: Carry one or two thin baby blankets because babies love to be swaddled. It keeps them both warm and comfortable.

Nappies: Keep a big pack of nappies. You don’t have any idea about your newborn’s routine. If he feeds 8 to 9 times a day, he will get wet/soiled 12 to 15 times. So, it would be best if you have plenty of diapers.

Wipes: A newborn’s skin is susceptible and gentle. It is better to use cotton wools or baby wipes to stay safe from any skin irritation.

With this hospital bag checklist, you are all set to bring your bub home. Don’t carry a huge bag; a large gym bag size may do. You can also separately pack your and your baby’s clothes to avoid any inconvenience. Some hospitals may require to bring along certain documents (like ID proof) and hospital forms, get confirmed beforehand. While pack your bag, remember to pack some clothes and snacks for your partner as well, who will be staying with you in the hospital.
