Here's Why Every Pregnant Mom Needs A Maternity Bra

Updated on Mar 11, 2025

Pregnancy Bra

We think pregnancy only adds volume to your belly. Your breasts and derriere will also undergo significant changes in size during and even after the baby is born. The first few weeks after milk production will have you thinking about having the right kind of lingerie a lot. Comfort is the most critical factor in maternity lingerie, and we agree that buying underwear when you are not quite sure of your size can be confusing. So here's a quick guide to help you through all of that. So you can buy maternity lingerie that suits you.

When should I buy maternity lingerie?

The straightforward answer to this question is: you should go for maternity lingerie as soon as you start experiencing any discomfort in your regular ones. The first signs of pregnancy appear pretty early on, sometimes even before you get yourself tested or pee on a stick. In the first few weeks, your body is gearing up for a baby, and chances are your bust will grow up to one or two sizes. While it's impossible to say how your body will evolve with the pregnancy, we know for a fact that breasts undergo significant changes almost every trimester. So although you definitely can't plan, you can still look at your body to decide if you need a new pair of lingerie.

How do I choose a maternity bra?

How to Choose Maternity Bra

We will get into that, but before that, here's a little advice. If you want to avoid spending unnecessarily on maternity wear and maternity lingerie, consider buying quality products on the first go instead of trying your hands on a couple to see what works. Also, try to buy from brands that specialize in maternity wear and maternity lingerie. Their products will have more options for size variations and fabric and better support your growing body and bump.

What's more, buying quality items that fit you means you could carry them from one pregnancy to another without spending another penny. So, for example, if you plan to breastfeed, you could consider going for nursing bras straight away instead of maternity ones.

How do I know my size?

Most expectant moms are taken aback when they have to wear D or E cup sizes during maternity or nursing when they were a size B or C pre-pregnancy. It's excellent news, of course, for the lesser endowed ones, but it means that bra buying during pregnancy or postpartum should be taken seriously. It's essential to retake your measurements at the local store or measure yourself at home if you are buying anything online. Oh, and remember to check the size chart of the brand you are buying from because sizes can vary depending on manufacturers.

Buying the right bra is essential at all times, especially during pregnancy. Keep these guidelines in mind before you buy one.

  • If this is your first trimester, buy a size where your hooks don't reach the last set of fasteners. If this is the case, you need to go for a bigger size. Your breasts and back will only expand throughout the pregnancy.
  • You should be able to slide your hand inside the back clasp or cup without a lot of trouble.
  • Don't wear your straps too tight.
  • Consider investing in a quality sports bra. They don't have hooks or fasteners and are relatively hassle-free.

With or without underwire?

Ideally, bras without underwire are best during pregnancy. But if you like the comfort of an underwire bra, try going for soft banded options to reduce discomfort to the chest & your growing belly.

Soft materials for maternity and breastfeeding

Bras crafted in cotton are suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cotton is a lightweight and breathable fabric. Also, nursing bras often have wide straps for support and comfort. A good bra can reduce back, neck, and shoulder pain.

And for the last trimester?

The breasts can often grow a cup size when the body is preparing for breastfeeding. This enlarged size does not last for very long. If you want new bras for nursing, do that towards the 8th or 9th month.
