Home Remedies to Relieve Pregnancy Symptoms

Updated on May 21, 2024

Every woman’s pregnancy is unique, but some discomforts are common during pregnancy.

An upset stomach leading to nausea or vomiting is very common and normal. For some, nausea disappears by the fourth month, while for others, it may persist throughout the pregnancy.

Most of the pregnant women also complain of indigestion and heartburn. Heartburn often becomes a trigger for nausea and vomiting too. Indigestion and heartburn become more common in the second and third trimesters when the baby bump starts pushing the acid upward.

In this article:

  1. Natural Ways to Combat The Common Pregnancy Ailments
  2. Home Remedies for Relieving Gas During Pregnancy
  3. Home Remedies to Treat Morning Sickness During Pregnancy
  4. Home Remedies to Treat Constipation in Pregnancy
  5. Home Remedies to Treat Headaches During Pregnancy

Instead of relying on the drugs, here are some natural ways to combat the common pregnancy ailments.

1. Ginger Tea

Ginger root contains a variety of plant compounds that may help reduce episodes of nausea and vomiting. Ginger helps to relieve pain from uterine cramping, experienced by many women in the first trimester. Ginger can also help neutralize stomach acids.

Studies suggest that up to 1 gram of ginger per day is safe, whether you chew it raw or take as a tea. You may also add ginger to your meals (in your salad dressings, soups, and stir-fried dishes). There are ginger supplements and candies too available in the market.

However, consuming ginger in large amounts can have some unpleasant side effects. Also, it is advised not to consume ginger close to labor and by women with a history of miscarriage or vaginal bleeding.

How to brew a quick, hot ginger tea?

Add about 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger into a cup of hot water. Let it sit for some 5-7 minutes. Voila! You are all set. (Add sugar if needed.)

2. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has become a popular drink among wellness enthusiasts. In the case of pregnant women, people recommend ACV for both morning sickness and other gastrointestinal disturbances. ACV helps to prevent urinary tract and yeast infections. Many claims that it prevents leg cramps and keep your energy levels up during pregnancy as well.

Though, of course, too much of anything is not good. Also, some pregnant women are a bit reluctant to take unpasteurized apple cider vinegar.

How to take ACV?

Mix 1 tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water. Your quick soothing drink is ready.

3. Fresh lemon

Lemons pack several essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that support both maternal health and fetal development. Lemon has powerful abilities to boost the body’s immunity and also fight common infections like cold and flu. Some clinical studies show that pregnant women find inhaling lemon essential oil effective and safe in reducing pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. Moreover, the citric acid in lemon may help to alkalize the stomach acids and hence, help in soothing heartburn. You can add lemon in your daily pregnancy diet in different ways.

How to take lemon?

Mix 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice into 8 ounces of water. Both a hot lemon tea or a cold lemonade is excellent. Adding some honey is also a good idea.

#1. Some tips to help avoid the discomforts during pregnancy in the first place:

  1. Eat smaller meals throughout the day for easy digestion of food.
  2. Avoid taking a large or heavy meal a couple of hours before going to bed.
  3. Sip water all day long. You need to keep your body hydrated throughout the day.
  4. Add some good physical exercises in your routine to stay active.
  5. Wear loose clothes. Tight-fitting clothes put too much pressure on the body organs.
  6. Avoid taking caffeinated and sugar beverages, spicy and fried foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol, and chocolate.

#2. Home remedies for relieving gas during pregnancy

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Avoid carbohydrates or sugary drinks.
  3. Try herbal tea, like ginger tea.
  4. Eat more fiber, but increase it gradually.

  9. Prenatal vitamin. If required, an additional dose of vitamin B6
  10. Try Sea-Bands
  11. Acupressure or acupuncture
  12. Use Certain Spices like Fennel powder, Cinnamon, Cumin

#4. Home remedies to treat Constipation in Pregnancy

  1. Eat a fiber-rich diet.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids.
  3. Use wet towelettes with Witch Hazel.
  4. Add a physical activity.
  5. Lemon.
  6. Wholegrain cereals and wholemeal bread.
  7. Try citrus fruits.
  8. Flaxseed.
  9. Acupressure.
  10. Laxatives.

Constipation makes you feel constantly bloated, gassy, and uncomfortable. Typical constipation symptoms include infrequent bowel movements, lumpy and hard stools painful to pass, and abdominal pain relief by bowel movements.

Pregnancy hormones are the reasons for constipation.

You can try these remedies to handle constipation:

  1. Switch to a high-fiber diet. Try to take 25 to 30 grams per day of dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, breakfast cereals, whole-grain bread
  2. Drink 10 to 12 cups of fluids each day. It is the combination of a high fiber diet and plenty of liquids that best help you eliminate your waste
  3. Eat five or six smaller meals to help with constipation relief
  4. Try to exercise three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes each

  6. Get plenty of sleep
  7. Eat smaller meals, more frequently.
  8. Avoid citrus, spicy, and fried foods
  9. Take a warm bath
  10. Try herbal remedies like herbal tea, cinnamon powder, apple cider vinegar, and ginger.
